INDONESIA SHOULDN’T SEND ITS REPRESENTATIVE TO BEAUTY PAGEANT

It’s a usual thing that every year Indonesia sends a representative to compete in beauty pageant like Miss Universe. It’s a pride that Indonesia can participate in world contest. Indonesia can also promote its culture through it. However, joining beauty pageant like this is a wasteful thing for Indonesia.
Firstly, there is much money spent for that such as for the preparation, the registration fee, and the accommodation in the country held the contest, etc. The preparation of course is not in a short time. There must be some trainers for the talent show, modelling, knowledge, and other preparations. Those all trainers need a lot of money as the fee. Then, the participant is selected through the national beauty pageant such as Miss Indonesia. Again, it needs a lot of money to accommodate the participants. Let’s say one participant from each province so the organizer has to accommodate 33 participants for several weeks. Then, the organizer has to pay for the registration fee to this world contest; it costs not even hundred rupiahs but million rupiahs. What about the fee for the flight to other country held the contest which can be far from Indonesia? Then after arriving at the country, is it needed to pay the accommodation there? Yes, absolutely and money is needed again. Unfortunately, the chance for Indonesia to be the winner is small. To be the best among hundred countries in the world is very hard. Shockingly, the fact is that Indonesia has never won this kind of beauty pageant since the first time it joined the contest around in 1995. It means that a lot of money which has been wasted may be not paid.
After that, it can undermine the feminism side of women especially the participants. In this world contest, there are three things which participants must have. They are beauty, brain and behaviour. In proving the brain and behaviour, it might be not really difficult for Indonesia’s representative. However, the beauty must be proved by showing almost the whole part of the body to prove that it is perfect with its proportional height and weight. It can be quite easy but this might create a stereotype for women around the world in which the only parameter of being beautiful is by having this kind of body shape. However, it cannot be eternally true. There will be a protest coming from women with their own shapes of body that are not the same as the criteria in the beauty pageant. Women have their “beautiful” right toward their own body as what is campaigned about the feminism. Whatever the shape of the body, women need to adore it. So, why should Indonesia join a contest in which it only takes the side of those who have “perfect” body according to them? It is clear that the contest which is aimed to dig the potential of women cannot actually achieve its aim well.
Some people believe that the purpose of Indonesia to join the contest is to promote its culture. However, how significant the result will be? In the contest, although the audience is only for the people in charge, it is also put in media such as television. People can access the show but it cannot guarantee that those people will come to Indonesia after watching it. If the promotion which is only shown in few minutes by Indonesia’s representative can achieve its goal, there should be an increase of tourists coming to Indonesia. Unfortunately, it is not as what Indonesians wish. It is hard to measure it. It cannot be guaranteed that the increasing number of tourists coming to Indonesia is because of the beauty pageant. There are some other aspects which influence it. It shows that the bright purpose of joining the contest cannot run well. There is no significant benefit can be got although much time and money have been spent for it. Therefore, sending Indonesia’s representative to beauty pageant like Miss Universe will be useless.
