HOME SCHOOL VS PUBLIC SCHOOL

Although there are many public schools in Indonesia, for some people home schooling gives more benefits. This relates to the essence of education which is not only determined by the place where students get the knowledge. Both public school and home school are good places for studying and they provide knowledge for students. However, it is influential for students to get the convenient atmosphere when studying.

            Home school takes place at home which means that the learning process is private. It’s good because it helps student to better concentrate on the material. In public school, students can concentrate but there are many factors that can distract one’s attention. If it is private then student can pay attention to the teacher easily. It drives student to be able to understand the material.

            Home school allows student to choose the subjects he wants to learn. Yes, the teacher must explain about the curriculum but finally student can choose with the consideration of the teacher. Without ignoring the curriculum of the home schooling institution, student can have the special needs. If the subjects are relevant to student’s need, the student will enjoy the learning process better. That makes the student has more spirit to study. In public school, students must follow the whole curriculum decided by the school. What if a student doesn’t like cooking class and must learn it? It sounds bad, right?

            Home school is flexible in time management. Student and teacher can manage the time based on their willingness. Student will not have a strict schedule every day so he will not be tired of a long period of studying. Home school runs only in the morning or afternoon for less duration than public school so that student can play with friends. Also, home school will not waste the student’s time if he has mastered a subject. He doesn’t need to wait for other students to understand a material. He can repeat the necessary material and just skip the material already mastered.

            Parents’ control is direct in home school. The place of the teacher and student’s interaction is at home, so it is easier for parents to control their child by seeing him directly. Parents will know the progress of the student without waiting for the invitation from the school to receive the report. It helps parents to give immediate feedback to their child.

            There will be psychological benefits. This “private” school will have no such kind of smarter or more stupid student. This is related to student’s self image, so if it is so then the student will not be burdened by labelling. In public school with many students, there will be a tendency for a student to mock other students. This is different from the home school where nobody can even mock or bully because it is private. This will build good self image of the student so he can master the knowledge well.
